In October of 1998, René married Hanneke, who had three daughters from her first marriage - Nadia, Kristie and Sarah.
In time they were joined by Noor and Tim, the two children born to René and Hanneke.

René and Hanneke became separated for some years, but lived together once more in 2012. During the period of his illness, René was supported by his wife, Hanneke, and he had their children and his loved ones constantly around him. As a result, he was full of hope for his recovery. Despite this, he finally lost his battle on 3rd October, 2012, and sadly passed away.

He was just thirty-seven years old.
